Port Fairy volunteers got their hands dirty to help support the much-loved Australian folk festival, as bottles and cans are now providing a new revenue stream for the event.

Following the 2024 annual Port Fairy Folk Festival, held in the historic town of Port Fairy, volunteers rallied together to sort around 40,000 eligible drink containers that were collected during the festival.

Eligible drink containers that have been collected can now be returned at a refund point for Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme, CDS Vic, for a 10c refund each. The refunds from these containers will go towards helping the festival provide funding to community events and organisations through its grant program.

Port Fairy Folk Festival committee member Robyn Steward said there had been a number of people who had put their hands up to help. She said it was hoped the container returns may result in a refund of up to $4000.

“It’s going to be a big effort this week and next week,” she said.

“We’re very grateful to everyone and all help is greatly accepted.”

This is the first time the festival has been able to collect and return their eligible drink containers for a refund since the commencement of Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme on 1 November 2023.
