“As operator of the CDS Vic West Zone, TOMRA Cleanaway has seen first-hand the enthusiasm of the Barwon community embracing Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme.”

More than 33 million eligible drink bottles, cans and cartons have been recycled with Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme across the Barwon region since the scheme commenced on 1 November 2023.

This means more than $3m has been returned to Barwon residents, charities and community groups in the first 7 months of the scheme.

In the Barwon region, there are 2 Depots and 24 Reverse Vending Machines for locals to deposit their eligible drink containers to receive their 10c refund in return.

Through these refund collections points more than 18 million aluminium cans, almost 8 million PET plastic bottles, and almost 7 million glass bottles have been returned.

BSL helping Barwon residents make positive change

One of the bulk container processing CDS Vic Depots in the Barwon Region that has been helping locals recycle with CDS Vic is the Breakwater Depot in Geelong South operated by the Brotherhood of St Laurence.

Logistics operations manager and acting head of social enterprise Kevin Tout said the Brotherhood of St Laurence was thrilled about the success of its first social enterprise project in the scheme and the jobs that it has provided.

“Recently, we have partnered with local charities and clubs by providing them with bins to collect eligible containers, raising funds for much-needed resources and making an impact on sustainability and the circular economy by keeping containers out of landfill,” he said.

“It’s amazing to see so many families getting behind the program with kids who love collecting eligible drink containers to earn easy pocket money.”

Depot services helping you return containers

Many CDS Vic Depots across the West Zone of Victoria are helping clubs, schools and charities make their Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme by providing container bins and collection services.

Collecting containers at events, clubs and organisations by running a collection drive is an easy way for groups to fundraise with CDS Vic – your supporters can donate their eligible drink containers via the bins at your event of club, which you can then return at your nearest Depot to receive your 10c refund for eligible container returned.
