CDS Vic Williamstown Depot Live Now!

“Depots, like the one opened today, will be staffed and able to sort and count bulk loads of beverage containers.

This is an exciting time for the community, businesses and industry to come together and make a positive impact.”

The Hon. Melissa Horne MP, Member for Williamstown

Friday 8 December was a day to celebrate, as Victorian Minister for Local Government, and Williamstown MP Melissa Horne officially welcomed the CDS Vic Depot Williamstown to Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme, CDS Vic.

Launched on 1 November, CDS Vic provides Victorians a 10-cent refund for every eligible drink container returned at a CDS Vic refund point across the state. Refund points include bulk container collection centres called depots, like the one operated by Citizen Blue in Williamstown, state of the art Reverse Vending Machines, and Over-the-Counter refund points.

Grand Opening Success

The CDS Vic Williamstown depot is heralded for delivering an innovative partnership between the west zone network operator, TOMRA Cleanaway and charity Citizen Blue, an environmental not-for-profit that puts fund generated back into grassroots environmental organisations such as Surfrider Foundation, Green Connect, Resource Recovery Australia, Clean Up Australia, Landcare Australia, Total Environment Centre and the Boomerang Alliance.

The opening event for the CDS Vic Williamstown Depot commenced with a Welcome to Country from the local Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation‘s representatives, Eric Edwards and Jungala Ellis. The Welcome to Country included a reflection on the Bunurong Peoples connections to the land around Williamstown, the Kulin Nation. A traditional Smoking Ceremony was also held as part of the Welcome to Country to cleanse all the participants at the event and the location.

Guests at the event included executives from TOMRA Cleanaway shareholders Cleanaway Waste Management and TOMRA Collections Solutions Australia.

Local business and charity and community stakeholders were involved in the ceremonial event, which included representatives from Hobsons Bay City Council.

Ceremonies included a welcome from Deputy Mayor, Cr Pamela Sutton-Legaud, who lauded the opening and the contribution to the local Hobsons Bay Council community that the site will boost, especially in regards to bolstering existing waste and recycling practices in the area.
