A new NSW Charity Barcode feature is launching on the Tag and Drop service. Customers will bring these barcodes to donate their containers session to a specific charity or community group registered with Return and Earn.
Instead of scanning their personal app barcode on the Tag and Drop Tablet, they will scan the Charity Barcode to donate the session’s total value. This enables a person to donate some of their containers using the charity barcode and receive a refund through the app for other bags of containers.
Each charity will have its own unique barcode.
How does this new process help?
Users no longer need to have the Return and Earn app to donate to their favourite cause at Return and Earn depots. This will lead to a larger number of formal donations to charities and community groups through depots like yours.
Supporting local causes helps your depot improve awareness, and positive sentiment in the community.
The Tag and Drop Donation Process
The only change to the existing Tag and Drop tablet process is substituting the user’s app barcode for the new Charity Barcode. The rest of the session remains the same.
Step-by-step Tag and Drop process:
1. A user indicates they wish to donate their session using a Charity Barcode.
2. Operator must notify the user that the Charity Barcode donation method does not provide a user receipt. Please see below for further information
3. The user scans the Charity Barcode on the Tag and Drop Tablet at the start of the session.
4. After the Charity Barcode is accepted, the user proceeds to scan their Bag Tag Stickers for the session as normal.
5. The user submits their containers, and the session ends as usual.
6. The donated amount will later be reflected in the “Raised so far” total on that charity’s page in the Return and Earn app. The funds will be automatically transferred to the charity’s nominated account.

Important: No Donation Receipts
This is the most critical point for operators to communicate.
- Before starting the session, the Depot operator must inform the user that this Tag and Drop charity barcode-based donation method will not provide them with a donation receipt.
- If a user wants a receipt: the operator must advise them to donate via the Return and Earn App on Tag and Drop Tablet by selecting their preferred Charity as their active payout and keep that active payout until their containers are processed.
- Receipt Threshold: A donation receipt is only provided (via the App-selected charity on Tag and Drop service ) if the donation session is valued at $2 or more.
Error Handling: Active Campaigns
1. Requirement: The tablet will only allow Bag Tag sticker scans to be added to a charity barcode donation session if the scanned Charity Barcode has an active campaign running.
2. Error State: If no active campaign is running for that charity, the user or operator will see a “Cross Image” (a red X) on the tablet screen when they try to scan a Bag Tag Sticker.
NB: In NSW charities must renew their campaign. Charities are contacted to remind them of their need to renew their campaign.
