Crafting connection, one container at a time

At Bellarine Women’s Workshop, recycling drink containers is doing more than reducing waste. Through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic), the returned containers are helping fund equipment for the group’s wood craft program while supporting connection, confidence and community amongst the group.

The Bellarine Women’s Workshop is a charity that uses craft and wood craft activities to reduce social isolation and create social connection among women across the Northern Bellarine. Since becoming a CDS Vic charity partner in March 2024, the group has raised almost $500.

CDS Vic has also become a practical service for members. At meetings, women can bring along eligible drink containers and have them returned on their behalf, this is particularly helpful to older members, those with mobility issues or anyone looking for an easy way to contribute to the workshop.

Bellarine Women’s Workshop Woodcraft Program Coordinator, Melanie Rogers said the flexibility of the scheme has made a real difference. “Our CDS Vic refunds and donations provide us with total control and discretion on how the money is spent and allows us to buy items otherwise we might not have,” she said.

West Zone network operator, TOMRA Cleanaway GM Victoria Tony Catania said, “This is how small everyday actions can help community groups create meaningful local impact. The Bellarine Women’s Workshop is using refund donations through CDS Vic to support practical programs while strengthening social connection and inclusion for women,” he said.
