The Glen Orden Cricket Club have returned an incredible 10,000 drink containers in the last 12 months. With a 10c refund for every eligible drink container returned as a part of Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme, CDS Vic, this has resulted in the club raising over $1,000 which they have used on new scoreboards, umpire counters, bowling markers, training cones and fielding bats.
After the scheme commenced on 1 November 2023, the club put the call out to their social networks to start collecting and donating their eligible drink bottles, cans and cartons to the club.

Glen Orden’s seven senior and three junior sides got to work, with the captains and coaches leading the way by filling up recycling bags with empty drink containers following their matches and training sessions.
Vimal Chatrati, the club’s admin, discussed what drove the team to starting the container drive.
“The very idea that there is so much garbage and waste of these containers which is going to waste and impact the environment around our grounds“, he said.
“We wanted a proper system in place where we can promote proper usage and disposal of these containers and if possible, anything in return would be used for the right causes.”
The container drive proved popular with the kids, who turned in their personal collections to their parents and coaches who would deposit them at a nearby reverse vending machine.
As word got out and their operation grew, the club partnered with the local CDS Vic Depot Point Cook operator Recycle4Change, who now come and collect the club’s bins once they’re full.
Mr Chatrati encourages other clubs to follow suit for the sake of creating a cleaner community and putting money back in the pockets of local clubs.

CDS Vic Point Cook Depot operator Recycle4Change are helping a number of clubs, pubs, community groups and corporate spaces make their change with CDS Vic!
The team at R4C have partnered with a number of local organisations, enabling container collections and returns through their R4C bins. R4C can facilitate drop and collection of these bins, where they will then process the returns through their fully automated counting and sorting technology.
