When Return and Earn launched on 1 December 2017, it marked the beginning of something simple; giving people an easy way to recycle their drink containers and get a 10-cent refund.
Today, that simple idea has grown into something extraordinary.
Together with the NSW community, and powered by our network of return points across the state, Return and Earn has now reached an incredible milestone; 16 billion containers returned.
That’s 16 billion opportunities for people to do the right thing for the environment, support their community, and be rewarded for it.
A network powering change
At the heart of this achievement is a network we’re incredibly proud of.
With more than 660 return points across NSW, TOMRA Cleanaway’s network has made it easy for people to build recycling into their daily routines.
From reverse vending machines at local shops to large depots serving communities big and small, every return point plays a role in connecting people to the scheme; and to each other.
This accessibility is what has helped make “returning and earning” a habit for millions of people across the state.
Real impact for people and communities
Those 16 billion containers translate into real, tangible outcomes;
- $1.6 billion in refunds returned directly to the community
- Over $100 million raised for charities and community groups
Every container returned is more than just recycling; it’s support for causes that matter.
Through the network, communities have backed everything from medical research and children’s education to animal welfare and environmental conservation. More than 600 charities are now part of the Return and Earn ecosystem, giving people an easy way to donate as they recycle.
It’s a powerful demonstration of how small everyday actions can add up to something much bigger.
Circular economy in action
For TOMRA Cleanaway, this milestone is about more than numbers; it’s about what those numbers represent.
Return and Earn shows what’s possible when smart infrastructure, community participation and a shared goal come together. Containers are kept in circulation, valuable materials are recovered, and less waste ends up in landfill or the environment.
