After four unforgettable days on Flinders Island, our Tasmanian Network Manager Nat said one thing is absolutely clear: this is a place where resourcefulness and generosity are not just admired, they are everyday superpowers. The people of Flinders wear many hats, step up when it matters most, and show what is possible when community spirit and shared purpose come together.
Nats visit combined several important priorities for TOMRA Cleanaway and the Recycle Rewards container refund scheme. Meeting with the local council – Flinders Council, completing compliance work, and most importantly, spent meaningful time connecting with the incredible local community and donation partners who play such a vital role in making Recycle Rewards a success on one of Australia’s most remote islands.
Small Acts – Big Impacts
Flinders Island demonstrates that size is no barrier to impact. Local residents, organisations and volunteers continuously show how collaboration and commitment can deliver outstanding results, not only for recycling outcomes, but for the broader wellbeing of the community.
For Nat, one of the standout highlights of the trip was seeing firsthand the extraordinary fundraising efforts driven by locals through Recycle Rewards. The community has collectively raised more than $2,900 for the Flinders Island School Association, placing them sixth in Tasmania for total funds raised – an incredible achievement for a small and dedicated island community.
At the same time, over $700 has already been donated through Furneaux Collective Inc to support local wildlife carers. These contributions directly assist people who work tirelessly to care for injured and orphaned native animals, often behind the scenes and entirely driven by passion. Supporting wildlife conservation is a cause close to our hearts, and seeing tangible outcomes from recycling efforts makes the impact even more powerful.
A Stunning Environment
Of course, this trip was not all meetings and milestones. Nat made time to experience the natural beauty that makes Flinders Island so special. A climb to the summit of Mount Strzelecki delivered breathtaking views – and a reminder that some rewards you “definitely feel the next day.” Nat and TasRecycle colleague James, also had the privilege of spending time with Kate, a legendary wombat carer whose dedication and compassion truly embody the spirit of the island.
These experiences reinforced why TOMRA Cleanaway’s work matters, it is more than a container refund operation: it is a platform that enables communities to support causes they care deeply about, strengthens local partnerships, and keeps valuable resources in circular use. On Flinders Island, this model thrives because people believe in it and actively participate.
This journey strengthened partnerships, supported meaningful local initiatives, and reminded us why Tasmanian communities are so special. Flinders Island is proof that when people come together with purpose, recycling can deliver so much more than environmental benefits, it can support education, conservation and community resilience.
