TOMRA Cleanaway Boosts Return and Earn Network
Wollongong residents are already recycling champions, having returned an incredible 392.8 million containers since the Return and Earn scheme began in December 2017. That’s a huge effort for a city of 214,000 people! And now, thanks to a significant investment from TOMRA Cleanaway, the network operator for Return and Earn, it’s now become even easier and more convenient to do your bit for the planet (and get that 10-cent refund!).
On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, TOMRA Cleanaway marked a major milestone with the relaunch of a newly upgraded Return and Earn network in the Wollongong Local Government Area. This investment brings state-of-the-art machine upgrades and a brand-new return point, all designed to enhance your recycling experience.
What’s New and Improved in Wollongong?
TOMRA Cleanaway has poured resources into ensuring Wollongong has access to the latest recycling technology, making returns faster and more efficient than ever before. Here’s a rundown of the fantastic upgrades:
- West Wollongong Hellenic Club Return and Earn machine: This popular location now boasts the largest Return and Earn machine in the region, featuring a massive six lines to recycle all eligible drink containers. Say hello to super-speedy returns.
- Corrimal Woolworths Return and Earn Machine: The upgraded machine at Corrimal now offers “takes all” functionality across its four lines. This means you can return all eligible containers through any line, making it more efficient than ever to Return and Earn at this highly popular spot.
- North Wollongong Return and Earn Machine: A fantastic new addition to the network, the North Wollongong machine is a game-changer for inner-city residents. With four lines and “takes all” capability, its convenient location near the North Wollongong train station and beach makes recycling on the go a breeze.
These upgrades are a direct response to the community’s incredible enthusiasm for recycling, aiming to make the process as seamless and rewarding as possible.
A Celebration of Recycling Success
The relaunch event at the West Wollongong Hellenic Club Return and Earn machine brought together key figures to celebrate Wollongong’s recycling achievements and the enhanced network. The Hon. Paul Scully MP, Acting Environment Minister, was in attendance, highlighting the success of the Return and Earn scheme. He was joined by James Dorney, CEO of TOMRA Cleanaway, who emceed the event, along with representatives from TOMRA Collection Australia, Cleanaway, NSW EPA, and Exchange for Change.
Adding a heartwarming touch to the event was the presence of Guide Dogs NSW & ACT representatives from Wollongong, the current major donation partner for Return and Earn. Their team, including the delightful Guide Dog in training, Wallace, who reminded everyone of the positive impact recycling has beyond environmental benefits, as refunds can be donated to worthy causes like Guide Dogs. Paul Hartley, Location Lead for Guide Dogs highlighted the amazing support Guide Dogs are receiving through Return and Earn, raising over $65,000 to date.
